Google Workspace and Google Admin security product icons

Use this if you suspect your account may have been compromised—or as a regular security check. Do these steps on a computer in a browser (not on phone).

This post is written so you can bookmark it, print it, or forward it to a teammate who needs a clear walkthrough right now.

1. Change Your Password

  1. Go to: https://myaccount.google.com/security
  2. Under How you sign in to Google, click Password.
  3. Enter a strong new password (at least 12 characters, unique, not used elsewhere).
  4. Click Change Password.

2. Run the Security Checkup

  1. Go to: https://myaccount.google.com/security-checkup
  2. Review and complete every section it shows (devices, 2-Step Verification, recovery info, recent security events, and apps with access).
  3. Remove anything you don’t recognize.

3. Review Devices Signed In

  1. Go to: https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity
  2. Look at every device and location.
  3. Click any unknown device → Sign out.

4. Check Email Forwarding

  1. Open Gmail → click the gear icon → See all settings.
  2. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  3. Look under Forwarding.
  4. If it shows any address you didn’t set up, click Disable forwarding and Save Changes.

5. Review Filters & Blocked Addresses

  1. Still in Gmail Settings, click the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
  2. Look at every filter.
  3. Delete any filter that:
    • Forwards mail to an unknown address
    • Deletes or archives mail you didn’t create
    • Looks suspicious
